GRADES OF FIRE PROTECTION

There have recently been some significant changes to the building regulations that relate to domestic fire protection, BS 5839-6:2019. BS 5839-6 gives recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in domestic premises that are: • Designed to accommodate a single family. • Houses with multiple occupation that comprise of a number of self-contained units, each designed to accommodate a single family. • Sheltered housing, including both the dwelling units and the common areas. Grades B and E have now been made obsolete, whilst Grades D and F have now been split into Grades D1 / D2 / F1 / F2.

GRADE D1 A system of one or more mains powered detectors, each with a tamper proof standby supply consisting of a battery or batteries.

GRADE D2 A system of one or more mains powered detectors, each with an integral standby supply consisting of a user replaceable battery or batteries.

GRADE F1 A system of one or more battery powered detectors, powered by a tamper proof primary battery or batteries.

LEGISLATION IN SCOTLAND Following the Grenfell Tower fire in London, the Scottish Government announced new fire and safety standards to ensure all households including homeowners, private landlords and social housing are protected against fire and carbon monoxide.

Homeowners who do not comply could be subject to comments about the properties non-compliance on any home report or receive an order from the relevant Local Authority requesting they bring the property up to standard. Housing associations whose properties are not compliant by the effective date will have the relevant action taken against them by the Scottish Housing Regulator. Allowance has been made to permit tamper proof long-life lithium battery alarms to be installed or mains-operated alarms with battery backup. Regardless of the type installed, all smoke and heat detectors must be interlinked and ceiling mounted. It is the property owner’s responsibility to meet this new standard. Households with alarms already fitted will need to ensure that they are interlinked so they will be alerted immediately no matter where the fire starts.

From 1st February 2019 the new legislation requires all households to have at least: • One Smoke alarm installed in the room most frequently used for general daytime living purposes • One Smoke alarm in every circulation space on each storey, such as hallways and landings • One Heat alarm installed in every kitchen • A Carbon monoxide detector where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance such as boilers, fires (including open fires), heaters and stoves or a flue.

HYBRID INTERCONNECTION The Hispec hybrid system is a sequence of smoke and heat alarms that use both the radio frequency battery and mains detectors in an interlinkable system. Our RF PRO alarms also utilise the Hispec control unit. Using this system, the installer is able to utilise just one mains product whilst interconnecting up to 19 additional battery only alarms, saving both time and money.

Removable compartment gives the ability to wire directly into the alarm and therefore prevent the need for any additional terminal blocks.

Increased space between the terminal blocks allows contractors to wire freely into the alarms without obstruction or difficulty.

Conduit knockout entry that allows the installer to wire into our alarms laterally enabling them to be fitted in a multitude of different locations.
