GLOSSARY Technical lighting terms and abbreviations. A guide to commonly used terms within the lighting industry.

AC (Alternating Current) Alternating current. An electric current that reverses its direction many times a second at regular intervals.

Accent Lighting Accent lighting focuses light on a particular area or highlighting an object. Display lighting. Ambient Lighting It is the combination of light reflections from various surfaces to produce a uniform illumination called the ambient light. This is in most cases a low light level. Analogue Dimming 1-10V Drivers, ballasts and luminaires with 1-10V. ACS - Accessories Venture ACS codes include mounting kits, bracketry and optional reflectors. CCT (Correlated Colour Temperature) Means of expressing the general colour of a light source. Higher CCT indicates a white or bluish light source. Lower CCT indicates a yellow light source. Commonly referred to as just colour temperature and expressed in degrees Kelvin. CE CE Conformity and marking is required on all products sold in the EU.

A

CD – Controls Dali Venture luminaires incorporating DALI controls contain the CD part code suffix.

C10 – 1-10V Venture luminaires incorporating 1-10V control include the C10 part code suffix.

C

Class I (Electrical) Mains supplied devices requiring a protective earth connection.

Class II (Electrical) Double insulated mains supplied devices not requiring a protective earth connection.

Class III (Electrical) These products are SELV, (Safety Extra Low Voltage) rated.

Colour Rendering (Ra) A specific form of CRI measurement used for most lighting products. Often used interchangeably with “CRI”.

Colour Rendering Index (CRI) General measurement of a light source’s ability to replicate the colour of objects compared with a natural light source. Higher CRI denotes more accurate colour rendition.

Drivers Electronic device for converting mains AC voltage into lower DC voltage for supplying LEDs.

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) An industry standard protocol for communicating with luminaires.

D

DC (Direct Current) An electric current supplied in one direction only. LED drivers typically supply DC current.

Directional Lighting Light source emitting most light in one direction towards the working surface.

DC – Coated Diffused Venture luminaires with optional diffuser contain the DC part code suffix. Some part codes only available with a diffuser may omit this.

Efficiency Ratio of useful driver output power to input power. Higher power drivers can typically achieve higher efficiency than smaller ones.

Efficacy Ratio of luminous,to power consumption (Lumens Per Watt). Can be quoted in terms of input power consumption or LED power consumption.

EMC Electromagnetic Compatibility. A set of standards and directives governing electromagnetic emissions from all electronic products.

EM– Emergency Lighting Battery or generator powered backup lighting for use in power cuts and mains failure

Emergency - Self Test Built in internal clock, which activates a self test of the emergency lighting at preset time intervals. Emergency Lighting Testing Regular periodic testing taken place to ensure luminaires are functioning correctly. Testing should be taken note under: Daily – Visual inspection of LED illumination Monthly – Luminaire operates when disconnected Annually – full rated duration of 3 hours Escape Route Lighting Purpose of lighting is to provide a definitive escape route from a point in a building to the final exit.

E
