Collingwood Lighting Brochure 2020/21

LED lifetime / light output.

compared to conventional incandescent lamps over the life of the product. Use the cost savings calculator on our website to see our estimate of how much our lights can save you compared to non-LEDs. Lifetime is stated as the number of hours of operation until the light level emitted from the LEDs will have dropped to a specified percentage of the original published values. For the majority of Collingwood Lighting products, lifetime is stated as ‘L70, B10 X hours’. Where, ‘L70’ means 70% of original light output remains. ‘B10’ means that 10% of products will have reached this level (i.e. 90% of products will have a light output greater than 70% of published) after ‘X’ number of hours of operation. As an example, the majority of Collingwood Lighting products state lifetime as L70, B10 for 70,000 hours. However, as LEDs do naturally lose their ability to emit light, even when they have reached this point, they will continue to operate for many hundreds of hours after this level has been reached, but at an ever-reducing level.

LEDs do not use heat to generate light in the same way as commonly used lights, where 80% of the power used is dissipated as heat. This is why LEDs are referred to as cool to touch and are safer to use, especially in ground light products. However an LED does have an operating temperature within its structure. This heat, if not removed will reduce the light output and product lifetime. This is why LED products have heatsinks or use the body of the product to dissipate the heat as quickly and efficiently as possible. Many Collingwood LED products have visible heatsinks: these are typically made from anodised aluminium and feature many thin fins. It is essential to have an air gap around the heatsink, as this ensures that heat is quickly removed, which keeps the LED at optimum temperature. LEDs do naturally lose their ability to produce light over many thousands of hours so Collingwood Lighting publishes the expected lifetime of products within the catalogue. This helps customers to easily determine how long the product will last, and to calculate how much energy will be saved
