Aurora Fire Rated Downlights

Fire Rating Compliance

Aurora Lighting Group & the Staircraft Group are first to successfully complete an independent assessment for compliance on Fire Rated Downlights with timber I-Joists

A partnership of Aurora Ltd and the Staircraft Group, the UK’s leading supplier of I-Joists, are first to have a recessed downlight range and timber I-Joists combination successfully assessed to demonstrate compliance that the combination will satisfy the Building Regulations 2010 – Approved Document B – Volume 1 of July 2019 for 30 minutes of structural resistance to fire within a domestic dwelling. The assessment was carried out independently by the Puetz Laboratory for Fire Safety in the Netherlands, which is accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council (or RVA) which has the same authority as UKAS in the UK, both being members of the EA, the European co-operation for Accreditation. This will ensure that both new build construction and that of refurbishment and extension to existing dwellings offers the developer and the builder the opportunity to achieve the full compliance of 30 minutes when using the relevant Aurora recessed fittings together with the relevant Staircraft TFSi I-Joists. Installation must be carried out subject to the conditions contained within the assessment undertaken by the Peutz laboratory for the Fire Safety Report C 1847-2E- RA-003, a copy of which is available from both Aurora Ltd and Staircraft Group Ltd. To provide clarification for achieving an approved installation, the appropriate assessment or testing is required for a specified I-Joist based floor construction and ceiling together with a specified recessed downlight, within the conditions detailed within the report and no other combination made up with an installation using only part of the combination The National House Building Council (NHBC), the UK’s leading warranty and insurance provider for UK house-building for new homes, recently stated that steps should be taken to ensure that fire rated downlights are compliant with I-Joists being used in new build homes.

Information

All of Aurora’s Fire Rated Downlights are also fully tested and approved for use within a solid timber joist construction and appropriate plasterboard for floor constructions to 30, 60 and 90 minutes.

Fire-Rated Compliance It is essential to understand the complexity of testing which recessed fire rated downlights are exposed to in order to comply with the regulations regarding minimum periods of fire resistance. Having undertaken a single test for a single time duration does NOT mean that the product will be suitable for all 30 / 60 / 90 minute duration applications. For a re- cessed downlight product to be fully compliant in all 30 / 60 / 90 minute installations, three separate tests of 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes are to be carried out with luminaires installed into the appropriate ceiling/floor construction type for which the relevant test certification is to be provided.
